Chapter 22

Tatum

I can feel the dread puddle in my stomach as I approach Brynn’s house. Taking in a deep breath, I exhale it as I try to push back my feelings.

She’s going to better her future. She needs this and she’ll be back in no time.

I walk up to her front door and ring the bell, waiting patiently for an answer. The door opens to reveal her older sister, Jessie.

“Hey.” She smiles as she moves aside. “Come on in.”

“Hey Jess.” I give her a smile in return as I walk through the doorway.

Shutting the door, she turns to face me. “Brynn’s in her room finishing up.”

“Cool.” I nod. “Thanks.”

I turn to head for the basement but Jessie’s voice stops me.

“I heard Axel’s back in town and living with you.”

I emit a low breath as I turn back around to face her. “Yeah.”

I can feel myself grow slightly annoyed at the mention of him. I’m sure Jessie has questions or wants to know things about him, after all Brynn claims Jessie’s still hung up on him.

However, Axel Griffin is the last thing I want to talk about right now.

He’s only been worse since I found out his little secret. The cold stares have been more frequent. His asshole remarks about how annoying I am seem to be constant when he’s around.

He’s trying to push my buttons even worse and every time I try to fight back he just lets out this dark laugh and leaves. At this point, I think it’s about time to consider that the man may be a psycho.

Or he’s been punched in the head one too many times.

The only thing that’s saved me is Courtney’s been having me help her with wedding stuff non-stop. It’s a little over a week away and she’s gone full-on bridezilla.

Well, not that bad, but she’s still so hell-bent on making sure everything is perfect for the big day coming up.

I’ve lost count of how many times she’s made us both try on our dresses. She’s had me help go over the guest list with her multiple times at this point just to make sure we don’t miss anyone.

It’s all just becoming, a lot.

I focus back on Jessie as I wait for her to get on with whatever question she has, clearly there’s something on the tip of her tongue but she’s nervous to spit it out.

“What about him?” I just want to get this out of the way.

I have bigger priorities, like saying goodbye to my best friend.

“Just be careful.” Her face holds a sincere expression as the words leave her lips. “I don’t know what Brynn’s told you about him and me, but I’m over it. I just know how crazy he made me so I can only imagine what it’s been like living under the same roof.”

“I am.” I force a fake half-smile. “Thanks though.”

Turning back around to head downstairs, I manage to dodge any further conversation involving him.
